Little fingers, little toes and the anticipation of what’s to come never fails to create excitement at The Cake Zone. We’ve been so blessed to have lifelong clients; those who begin with us as engaged couples and follow the path from wedding to anniversary and then to baby shower. Although we’re mostly known for our towering celebrity-style wedding cakes, it’s sometimes the smallest of jobs that give us the biggest delights.
Perhaps you’ve heard of the latest baby shower trend? Baby reveal cakes! Here’s how it works: Expectant parents ask their obstetrician or sonographer to keep the baby gender completely secret. Instead, the sex of the baby is written on a piece of paper and then sealed into an envelope. A trusted family member then brings the envelope to their favorite bakery. A stylized cake is then created based on the information found within the envelope. If it’s a boy, the cake and/or frosting inside is blue. If it’s a girl, the cake and/or frosting inside is pink. Variations on this theme include stuffed cupcakes, cake pops and infused cookies. Once delivered to the baby shower, friends and family gather as the expectant couple cuts the cake and learns for the first time if it will be a little boy or a little girl.
I don’t mind telling you I feel like I am at the academy awards very time I open one of those precious little envelopes. My knees get a little weak, my stomach gets a few butterflies and I can feel my heart racing. Sometimes I am the only one who knows the baby’s gender outside of the OBGYN staff! The pressure is on. You can almost hear a pin drop as we wait to see the words boy or girl appear from the now crinkly envelope! We have been known to jump up and down and shriek from time to time.
Why all the drama? It’s simple really. Baby reveal cakes are often ordered by couples we’ve grown to know over the years. Perhaps we’ve made the wedding cake of their dreams or celebrated their parents 40th wedding anniversary or have been a part of a big 30th Birthday extravaganza. We’re so blessed to have such a long list of repeat customers who trust us with their most precious and treasured moments. We know expectations are high, and we work hard to raise the bar on every creation we make. I often say our clients feel more like family than patrons. That’s never truer than when we’re preparing a cake to announce a beautiful new addition! I’m already dreaming about the smash cake…
